Choosing the right backboard material

Acrylic
  • Provides clean look of glass without the expense.
  • Thicker acrylic equals better play.
  • Heavier framing around board (aluminum or steel) improves rebounding characteristics.
  • The next best alternative to glass backboards.
  • Indoor/outdoor use.
Steel
  • A durable choice, especially for outdoor and side courts.
  • Excellent longevity and strength.
  • Does not have the same playability and rebounding capabilities as other materials.
  • Indoor/outdoor use.
Aluminum
  • Tough, rustproof, and lightest in weight.
  • Does not have the true playability of other material options.
  • A good choice for recreational play.
  • Indoor/outdoor use.
Glass
  • The choice for all high school, college, and pro competition.
  • Superior performer for rebounding and durability.
  • Approximately four times as heavy as acrylic.
  • Mass and material dissipates nearly all vibrations.

Choosing the right backboard: Rectangular or fan-shaped?

Rectangular
 
  • Official 72"W x 42"H or 72"W x 48"H sizes.
  • The backboard of choice for high school, college, and pro competition.
  • Provides more room for play and bank shots than fan-shaped backboards.
Fan-Shaped
 
  • A streamline, noncompetition 54"W x 35"-39"H backboard.
  • Often used for side courts and where space is at a premium.
  • Doesn't offer as much space for bank shots as rectangular boards.

Product Details

Steel Frame 72" X 42" Rectangular Glass Backboard with Built-in Adapter for 35" x 20" Mounting

The backboard shall be fabricated with heavy steel frame constructed of formed steel angles, welded together and connected with heavy-gauge steel mounting plates to reinforce corners. The lower horizontal frame section shall have a tubular steel support brace for added strength. Manufacturer of backboard shall have over ten years of experience producing such item. Backboard shall meet NCAA and high school requirements.

Entire frame and components shall be powder-coated with a durable neutral gray finish. Acrylic cushioning pad shall be used between steel mounting plate and glass to protect board against possible breakage.

Adapter brackets shall be positioned at 20" vertical and 35-1/4" horizontal centers for mounting backboard with standard fan-shaped mounting dimensions.

Glass shall be ½” in thickness and fully tempered with the white target lines permanently fused onto the surface. 12mm glass will not be considered equal to ½” glass, with a nominal thickness range of .485” to .515”, and will not be used as a substitute for full ½” glass. Vinyl shock- absorbing material shall insulate the glass from the frame. Goal mounting holes shall be on standard 5" horizontal and 4" vertical centers.
