Challenge your students on their food group knowledge with these thought-provoking cards! Cards are color-coded by food group, with each card containing a question related to that food group and the answer. Incorporate with any Skillastics® game, PE activity, or use alone as a teaching tool.
Activity Ideas
With Skillastics® games: Once students complete a Skillastics® activity on the color-coded game board mat, the player who rolls the dice picks a nutritional card from the corresponding color pile and reads the question to his/her team. If the team answers correctly, the team keeps the card. If they answer incorrectly, the card goes in the discard pile.
Nutrition Card Jog
Scatter the nutritional cards in the center of the gym. Divide students into teams of two. Teams begin jogging around the outside of the gym together. On a signal, one team member jogs to the center to collect a card, jogs back to his teammate, then reads the question to her. If his partner answers correctly, the card can be returned to the center of the gym. If answered incorrectly, teammates hold onto the card until the end of the activity. Teammates will take turns returning to the center to collect cards on each designated signal. At the end of the activity, teammates review the questions they answered incorrectly together. Variations: Rather than jogging, incorporate another motor skill, such as skipping.
Nutrition Circle
Scatter the nutritional cards in the center of the gym. Divide your class into six or more teams, with each group in an area surrounding the center of the gym (use cones, poly spots, or hula hoops to designate each group's area). On a signal, one student from each team jogs to collect a card from the center of the gym, then returns to the team and asks the question on the card. If answered correctly the team keeps the card. If answered incorrectly, the next teammate returns that card to the center and collects a new card. Designate an activity for the teammates to do while they're waiting for their next question, such as a fun fitness exercise or their favorite fitness activity from Fitness Skillastics® (if applicable). The team with the most nutritional cards at the end of the designated time wins.
Everyone's It
Distribute one nutrition card to each child in your class, then ask them to scatter throughout the gym. On a signal (or when the music starts playing), students walk toward another student, holding the nutrition card against their foreheads. The two exchange nutritional cards, place them against their own foreheads, and move on to the next student. Play continues until a signal is made or the music stops. Students then look at the top color of their card and quickly find 2 to 4 students with the same color. Each student then takes turns reading their question to the rest of the students in their group while their group tries to successfully answer the question. Once the questions are completed, the group can perform jumping jacks (or another fitness activity) until the music starts again and play continues.
