Backgammon is a game based on simple concept, great strategy, and often down-to-the-wire excitement. Students survey the board, make their moves, and try to keep their opponents from doing the same as they try to take all their checkers off the board.

Backgammon in the Classroom

Backgammon is part luck and part skill, making it a great tabletop game for any age player. Players are at the mercy of the dice. But with some critical thinking and strategy, players can use any dice roll to their advantage. They quickly learn how to play offensively and defensively, testing their logic and reasoning skills. Math is also a crucial part of the game, making the game ideal for classroom use.

How to Play

Backgammon is played with 2 players, representing the 2 colors of checkers positioned around the board. Players need to move all their checkers around the board and bear them off at the end before their opponent does. Checkers are moved clockwise for Player 1 and counterclockwise for Player 2. Each player takes turns rolling the dice and moving. Players can also attack opposing pieces by landing on them, sending them out of play until they’re able to reenter by finding a blank space on the board somewhere in their starting quadrant.

For 2 players, ages 5 and up.
